The 3.5 by 5.5 Inch Pocket Notebook Format

Pocket notebooks settled on 3.5 by 5.5 inches, or 89 by 140 mm, and stayed there. Field Notes use it, the Moleskine Cahier Pocket uses it, and so do most of the smaller memo books sold in stationery shops. These covers are cut at 3.8 by 5.8 inches so a booklet of that size sits inside with its corners protected rather than level with the leather.

Which Booklets Fit

Field Notes editions, the Moleskine Cahier Pocket and Moleskine Pocket, Word Notebooks, Scout Books and most 3.5 by 5.5 inch memo books. Passport-format notebooks at 89 by 124 mm also fit, with a little room at the top and bottom. Because they sit on elastic bands rather than in a fixed pocket, you can run several at once and swap them freely.

Why a Leather Cover for a Paper Booklet

Pocket booklets are made to be used up and thrown in a drawer, which is exactly why they come home bent, damp and missing a corner. A cover means the booklet survives the pocket it lives in, and it means the finished ones stack on a shelf still readable. You keep one cover and go through as many booklets as you like.

Field Notes Against the Nearby Sizes

Worth knowing: Asperaria's Pocket Size is a different format at 102 by 130 mm, wider and shorter, and will not take a 140 mm tall booklet.
