Refill Size Is the Paper Size, Not the Cover Size
The one thing to get right when ordering. Every cover is cut larger than the notebook inside it, so an A5 refill is 5.8" × 8.3" (14.8 × 21 cm) while the A5 cover that holds it measures 6.3" × 9.1" (16 × 23 cm). Order by the size name printed on your cover and it matches; order by the cover's own measurements and you will get one size too big.
The Three Papers
- Paper Refill — 48 pages, and you pick lined or plain white. This is what most people run two of: one lined for writing, one plain for lists and anything that does not want to sit on a rule.
- Color Paper Refill — 48 sheets in pink, green, light green, beige, blue, black, or a mixed pack. Useful when you run three notebooks at once and want to tell them apart by spine color rather than by opening each one.
- Watercolor Paper Refill — 40 sheets of white 250 gsm. That weight is the point: ordinary notebook paper cockles the moment you put a wash on it, and watercolor paper this heavy is made to take one.
A Watercolor Sketchbook in a Pocket Format
Worth knowing, because it is hard to buy elsewhere: the 250 gsm refill comes in all eight formats, including Field Notes and Pocket Size at 3.5" × 5.5" (8.9 × 14 cm). Most watercolor pads start at A5 and go up. In a leather cover it becomes a pocket sketchbook you can actually paint in, and the finished one comes out and goes on a shelf.
Traveler's Notebook Refills
The Regular refill is 4.3" × 8.3" (11 × 21 cm), the standard traveler's notebook size, so it drops into a TRAVELER'S COMPANY cover as readily as into ours. The same works in reverse: third-party Regular refills go straight onto our elastics. Nothing here is proprietary.
You May Not Need These At All
If you already own a Leuchtturm, a Moleskine, a Hobonichi or a stack of Field Notes, the cover holds those. Refills exist for people who want the paper to arrive with the leather, or who want a format nobody else cuts. Buying a cover does not commit you to buying paper from us, now or later. The covers are on leather journals, and the rest of the add-ons on journal accessories.
