Pocket Size Leather Journals

Pocket Size Leather Journal Covers: 3.5" × 5.5" in a Wider Shape

Pocket Size takes a 3.5" × 5.5" (8.9 × 14 cm) notebook in a cover measuring 4.3" × 5.9" (10.9 × 15 cm) closed. It is wider than our Field Notes cover and a centimeter shorter, which lets it sit flat in a jacket or a back pocket instead of standing out of one. Sold as a leather pocket journal, it is really a leather pocket notebook cover: any 89 × 140 mm booklet goes in, the size Field Notes come in. If you are after a small leather journal or a small leather notebook to carry every day, this and A6 are the two sizes to compare.

Pocket Size Dimensions in Inches, Centimeters and Millimeters

• Pocket notebook (the paper) — 3.5" × 5.5", 8.9 × 14 cm, 89 × 140 mm.
• Asperaria Pocket cover, closed — 4.3" × 5.9", 10.9 × 15 cm, 109 × 150 mm.
• A6, for comparison — 4.1" × 5.8", 10.5 × 14.8 cm. The next size up in page area.
• Passport size, for comparison — 3.5" × 4.9", 8.9 × 12.4 cm. Same width, 1.6 cm shorter.

Yes, a Field Notes and a Moleskine Pocket Both Fit

The names cause confusion, so to be direct: a Field Notes booklet, a Moleskine Cahier Pocket and a Moleskine Pocket are all 89 × 140 mm, and all three go into this cover. It takes exactly the same paper as the Field Notes-compatible cover does. They are not two formats — they are two shapes cut around one booklet:

• This Pocket cover — 109 × 150 mm. About 1 cm of leather at each side, about 0.5 cm above and below. The page is framed.
• Field Notes cover — 97 × 160 mm. About 0.4 cm at each side, about 1 cm above and below. The page is gripped at the edges.

Buy this one if you want the wider, squarer object in the hand and a cover that lies flat in a pocket.

What Fits This Pocket Journal Cover: Booklets and Refills

• TRAVELER’S COMPANY Passport refills — 89 × 124 mm, with 1.6 cm to spare in height.
• Asperaria Pocket Size refills — 48-page lined or plain, colored paper, and 250 gsm watercolor. See notebook refills.

Looking for a Journal With Pockets, Not Pocket Size?

Two different things share the word. Pocket Size is the format on this page — a small cover for an 89 × 140 mm booklet. Pockets are card slots, zip pouches and document sleeves, and on an Asperaria cover those are separate pieces that ride on the same elastic bands, in any size from Pocket to A4.

• Journal inserts and organizers — card wallets, zip pouches and folders that add pockets to any cover.
• Wallets and leather goods — if what you actually want is a wallet you can write in.
• All journal accessories — everything that attaches to a cover, in one place.

Adding an insert is what turns a small cover into a carry-everything object.

What Pocket Size Is Good At

Notes taken standing up. Shopping lists, gig setlists, quick sketches, a running to-do, addresses and numbers you would otherwise lose in a phone. This is a carry-everywhere size rather than a sit-down-and-write one, and it pairs well with a bigger journal that stays on the desk. For a larger page in a similar carry, see A6; for the tall narrow traveler’s format, see Regular size.

Pocket Size in Six Core Leather Colors

Pocket covers are cut from full-grain Crazy Horse in six core colors: Black Onyx, Chestnut brown, Forest Green, Bordeaux burgundy, Cognac and Caramel. Some models add Framboise, Rouge, Croco Chestnut or a two-tone Black Onyx. All eight sizes are on the leather journal covers hub, and every Pocket cover can be personalized by laser engraving, heat stamping, or gold or silver foil.
