Regular Size Leather Journal Covers: the Traveler’s Notebook Standard

Regular is the original traveler’s notebook format — tall, narrow, and built around a 4.3" × 8.3" (11 × 21 cm) insert. Every cover here is full-grain Crazy Horse leather, measures 4.8" × 9.1" (12.2 × 23 cm) closed, and runs its booklets on elastic bands so you keep the cover and change the paper.

“Regular Size” and “A Regular Notebook” Are Not the Same Thing

This trips people up constantly, so to be direct. Regular Size is a proper name: the standard TRAVELER’S notebook format, 110 × 210 mm. A regular notebook, in ordinary speech, means whatever is normal where you live — and that is a different size in every country:

• United States — a composition book at about 7.5" × 9.75" (19 × 24.8 cm), or letter-size filler paper at 8.5" × 11" (21.6 × 27.9 cm). Closest standard sizes: B5 and A4.
• Europe — A5, 5.8" × 8.3" (14.8 × 21 cm). See A5 leather journals.
• Japan — JIS B5, 7.2" × 10.1" (18.2 × 25.7 cm). See B5 leather journals.
• Traveler’s notebook Regular — 4.3" × 8.3" (11 × 21 cm). This collection.

So if you searched for a regular notebook size and meant "the normal one", you probably want A5. If you meant the traveler’s notebook standard, you are in the right place.

Regular Size Dimensions in Inches, Centimetres and Millimetres

• Regular insert (the paper) — 4.3" × 8.3", 11 × 21 cm, 110 × 210 mm.
• Asperaria Regular cover, closed — 4.8" × 9.1", 12.2 × 23 cm, 122 × 230 mm.
• A5, for comparison — 5.8" × 8.3", 14.8 × 21 cm. Exactly the same height as a Regular insert, but 3.8 cm wider.
• Passport size, for comparison — 3.5" × 4.9", 8.9 × 12.4 cm, 89 × 124 mm.

The height match with A5 is the useful fact: Regular gives you an A5-tall page in a shape narrow enough for a coat pocket or a back pocket. You lose width, not line length.

Notebooks and Inserts That Fit a Regular Cover

• Any Regular-size insert from Midori, Galen, Chic Sparrow, Foxy Fix or an independent maker, cut to 110 × 210 mm.
• Asperaria Regular refills — lined, dotted, blank and 200 gsm watercolour paper.
• Does not fit: A5, 148 × 210 mm — same height, 38 mm too wide for this cover. Use A5 leather journals instead.

Three or four booklets run at once on the elastic bands, which is how most people use a Regular: one for daily notes, one for a project, one blank for whatever comes up.

Building Out a Regular Traveler’s Notebook

• Notebook refills — Regular-size paper in four rulings, including 200 gsm watercolour.
