Cahier Size Leather Journal Covers

Moleskine's Large notebooks are not A5. They are 18 mm narrower, and in an A5 cover they sit with room at the sides. This cover is cut for them instead: 5.8" × 9.1" (14.7 × 23.1 cm) closed, with about a centimeter of leather around a Cahier Large on every side. As a Cahier notebook cover it also takes the hardcover Classic Large.

Cahier Size in Inches and Centimeters

• Moleskine Cahier Large — 5" × 8.3" (12.7 × 21 cm), the size this cover is cut for.
• Moleskine Classic Large — 5.1" × 8.3" (13 × 21 cm), hardcover or soft, 3 mm wider. Still fits.
• Our Cahier cover, closed — 5.8" × 9.1" (14.7 × 23.1 cm).
• Does not fit: A5, 5.8" × 8.3" (14.8 × 21 cm). It is as wide as this cover; use the A5 cover.
• Moleskine Pocket and Cahier Pocket — 3.5" × 5.5" (9 × 14 cm). Too small here; they go in our Field Notes or Pocket Size covers.

Cahier Next to the Sizes Either Side

• Regular — 4.3" × 8.3" (11 × 21 cm), the tall traveler's notebook refill. Same height, 1.7 cm narrower. See Regular size.
• Cahier — 5" × 8.3" (12.7 × 21 cm). This collection.
• A5 — 5.8" × 8.3" (14.8 × 21 cm). Same height, 2.1 cm wider. See A5 leather journals.
• B6 — 5" × 7.2" (12.8 × 18.2 cm). The same width as a Cahier Large, about 3 cm shorter. See B6 leather journals.

Regular, Cahier and A5 all share the 21 cm page height. That is why they look alike on a shelf and fit so differently in a cover.

Cahiers Are Thin, Hardcovers Are Not

A Cahier Large is a stitched booklet with a card cover, so it bends with the leather. Three of them, one per band, still let the cover close flat. A hardcover Classic Large hangs on its band the same way, through the center spread, but the boards take up room. Pair it with something thin.

If Your Notebooks Are A5, Buy the A5

This cover only makes sense for Large-size notebooks. If what you carry is a true A5, a Leuchtturm1917 Medium, a Hobonichi Cousin or a Midori MD A5, it will not go in here at all, and the A5 covers are the right buy. If you switch between a Moleskine Large and A5 notebooks, the A5 cover takes both, the Moleskine with room at the sides.

The Lucien in Cahier Size

The Cahier cover is made as the Lucien, in six leathers, with three elastic bands and leather pockets inside for cards and loose notes. It closes with an elastic around the outside. Three bands give about 1.6" (4 cm) of spine: three Cahiers, or a hardcover Large with a Cahier and an insert.

Refillable Rather Than Bound

• Paper refills — the 48-page refill comes in Cahier size, white, lined or dotted, for the spare band.
• Leather inserts — the Regular-size ones are close to the Cahier height and sit on a band beside the notebook.
• Pen cases — for the pen that would otherwise ride loose in the bag.
• Journal charms and bookmark clips — on the closure elastic and on the page.

Leather, Color and a Name

The Lucien comes in Black Onyx, Chestnut, Forest Green, Bordeaux, Cognac and Caramel, all full-grain Crazy Horse. Black Onyx, Chestnut and Forest Green are close to the same depth and differ mainly in hue; Caramel is the lightest. Initials or a name can be personalized before checkout.
