Leather Sketchbook Covers, 6 × 9 Inch
A sketchbook lives a rougher life than a notebook, and its own cover shows it. A leather sketchbook cover goes around the outside and takes the knocks. The sketchbook hangs on an elastic through its center fold, so it opens like a book for drawing, and when the last page is used it comes off and the next one goes on.
Sketchbook Cover Size in Inches and Centimeters
- 6" × 9" sketchbook — 15.2 × 22.9 cm, the size this cover is cut for.
- Our sketchbook cover, closed — 6.7" × 9.8" (17.2 × 24.9 cm), about a centimeter of leather all round.
- A5 sketchbook — 5.8" × 8.3" (14.8 × 21 cm). Fits with room around it; the A5 cover is the snug option.
- 7" × 10" and B5 sketchbooks — too big here. They go in our B5 cover.
- Does not fit: spiral and wire-bound sketchbooks of any size. There is no center fold for the elastic.
Stitched, Stapled or Wire-Bound
Check the binding before the size. A stitched or stapled sketchbook has a center fold, and that fold is where the elastic sits. A spiral has a coil and no fold, so there is nothing for the band to hold. A hardbound sketchbook goes on the band the same way as a stitched one, through the middle, though its boards make the stack thicker.

Two Models: Lucien and Amaryllis
The sketchbook cover comes as the Lucien and the Amaryllis, both in six leathers, both with leather pockets inside for reference cards, a color chart or receipts from the art shop. Put a sketchbook on one band and a thin notebook for color notes on the next. Our 48-page paper refill also comes in this size, white, lined or dotted. It is writing paper, not drawing paper; the watercolor refills are made in A5 and smaller, and those sit in this cover with room. A pen case carries pencils and brushes separately.
If Your Sketchbook Is A5
Then buy the A5 cover. An A5 sketchbook goes in this one, but with a centimeter and more of spare leather around it, and it will shift when you draw near the edge. This cover is for the 6" × 9" format, and for people who carry a 6" × 9" sketchbook next to an A5 notebook on the same bands.
Leather and Color
The Lucien and Amaryllis are both cut in Black Onyx, Chestnut, Forest Green, Bordeaux, Cognac and Caramel, full-grain Crazy Horse with a wax finish. Graphite and paint smudges are harder to see on the darker three, and on all six most marks rub back. A name, initials or a small logo can be personalized on the front.
