Leather Covers for Clairefontaine Notebooks

Clairefontaine Notebook Covers in Leather

Clairefontaine's smooth paper is the reason people buy it, and its soft card covers show wear quickly in a bag. Our cover takes the wear instead. The notebook hangs on an elastic through its center fold, so it opens and writes exactly as before, with leather around the outside.

Which Clairefontaine Notebooks Fit

• Clairefontaine A5, stapled or sewn — 5.8" × 8.3" (14.8 × 21 cm): A5 covers, 6.3" × 9.1" (16.0 × 23 cm) closed.
• Clairefontaine A4, stapled or sewn — 8.3" × 11.7" (21 × 29.7 cm): A4 covers, 8.9" × 12.6" (22.6 × 32 cm) closed.
• Wirebound Clairefontaine, any size — does not fit. The elastic has nothing to go through.

Stapled, Sewn or Wirebound

Look at the spine. A stapled notebook shows two staples in the middle spread, a sewn one shows thread, and both have a center fold. That fold is where our elastic sits. A wirebound notebook has a coil instead and opens by bending around it, which is good at a desk and no use inside a refillable cover.

The A4 Cover

A4 is the largest cover we cut, a full printed page with room around it: about 8 mm at each side and a centimeter above and below. It is a desk and bag cover. Carried in one hand all day, it gets heavy. Rhodia, which belongs to Clairefontaine, makes side-stapled A5 and A4 notebooks that fit the same covers.

Bands and Closures

Most of our A5 and A4 covers have three elastic bands; the Gabriel and Meloria have five. One stapled Clairefontaine per band, so a three-band cover carries a working notebook, a spare and an insert. Closures vary by model: an elastic around the outside, a leather strap or a snap. A trifold adds a front flap for loose sheets, which on an A4 is a lot of extra leather to carry.

Refills and Extras

When the Clairefontaine runs out mid-week, our paper refills in A5 and A4 fit the same bands, plain, lined or dotted. A leather insert adds a zip pocket for loose sheets, and a bookmark clip holds the page.

Leather and Color

Six full-grain Crazy Horse leathers: Black Onyx, Chestnut, Forest Green, Bordeaux, Cognac and Caramel. A large A4 panel shows the leather's character more than a small cover does, with the color lifting wherever it folds. A name or a logo can be personalized on the front, and on A4 there is room for more than initials. All sizes are on the leather journal covers page.
