Leather Covers for Moleskine Notebooks
Moleskine names its sizes Pocket and Large, and neither is an ISO size, so a leather Moleskine cover has to be matched by measurement. A Moleskine Pocket cover here is our Field Notes or Pocket Size; a Moleskine Large or Cahier cover is our Cahier size, cut for them. Hardcover or soft, the notebook hangs on an elastic.

About Leather Covers for Moleskine Notebooks
Leather Moleskine Covers, Matched by Measurement
Moleskine's own covers are not leather. The company describes its standard hard covers as polypropylene and its soft covers as polyurethane. A leather Moleskine cover goes around the notebook you already own: the Moleskine hangs on an elastic band through its middle spread, and the leather takes the knocks.
Moleskine Sizes and Where They Go
- Classic Pocket and Cahier Pocket — 3.5" × 5.5" (9 × 14 cm): Field Notes covers, narrow and tall, or Pocket Size covers, wider and shorter.
- Cahier Large — 5" × 8.3" (12.7 × 21 cm): Cahier covers, the size they are cut for.
- Classic Large — 5.1" × 8.3" (13 × 21 cm), 3 mm wider: the same Cahier covers.
- XL — 7.5" × 9.8" (19 × 25 cm): does not fit. It is as wide as our B5 cover.
Two Shapes for the Pocket
Two of our covers take the Pocket, and they are not the same shape. The Field Notes cover is 3.8" × 6.3" (9.7 × 16 cm) closed: a few millimeters at the sides, about a centimeter above and below. The Pocket Size cover is 4.3" × 5.9" (10.9 × 15 cm): a centimeter at each side, less at the ends. Same notebook in both. Pick the shape you like holding. Field Notes memo books are the same 3.5" × 5.5", so either cover takes them too.
The Large Is Not A5
A Moleskine Large is 18 mm narrower than A5 paper. In our A5 cover it sits with room at the sides and can drift. The Cahier cover, 5.8" × 9.1" (14.7 × 23.1 cm) closed, is cut for the Cahier Large, and the Classic Large is only 3 mm wider, so both sit close to the edges there.
Hardcover or Cahier
A hardcover Moleskine goes on the elastic the same way as a Cahier: open it to the middle, slide the band through, close it. The boards add thickness and stiffness. Two hardcovers in one leather cover make a chunky stack; one hardcover next to a thin Cahier stays slim. Cahiers are stitched booklets, thin enough that three ride on three bands without the cover bulging.
Refills, Colors and the Rest
When the Moleskine runs out, our paper refills come in Cahier, Pocket Size and Field Notes sizes, plain, lined or dotted. The covers are full-grain Crazy Horse in six colors: Black Onyx, Chestnut, Forest Green, Bordeaux, Cognac and Caramel, and any of them can be personalized. A leather insert adds a zip pocket on a spare band. The leather journal covers page has every size.
